bosa, sardinia, italy - crayola-colored coastal bliss

Three years ago, my dad and I spent ten days in Sardinia, the little island which is the football that the 'boot' of mainland Italy is kicking. My father had lived there for a few years in the '70s while in the Coast Guard, and his love of the island's incredible beaches, mouth-watering seafood, colorful small towns, and spectacular nature was infectious. On that trip, I fell in love twice -- with the charming island itself, and with the boy (the Italian doctor of my father's dreams!) that I would end up marrying.

This year, one month before our wedding, Alex & I went back to sunny Sardinia for five days.

We spent the first few days of our trip in Bosa, on the western side of the island (far, far away from the heavily built-up and tourist-frequented Costa Smeralda on the north-east). This tiny town is split into two -- Bosa Marina, at the beach, and the colorful, inland town of Bosa.

Ristorante Borgo S. Ignazio, Bosa, Sardinia, Italy
RISTORANTE BORGO S. IGNAZIO - VIA SANT'IGNAZIO 33, BOSA

Three years ago, my father and I had dinner al fresco at this restaurant -- the fish of the day, house wine, and a loud and happy group of locals celebrating inside. When Alex and I returned, the restaurant was similarly taken over by a couple groups of rowdy, cheerful locals -- a good sign. The food and wine was as spectacular as ever. Well worth the hunt to find.

LOCANDA DI CORTE - VIA DEL POZZO 7, BOSA

Locanda di Corte, tucked away on a winding side-street in Bosa's old town, was a last-minute surprise. We ended up going here three times during our few days in Bosa.

Though, in our defense, it's not the world's biggest town -- you only have so many choices, particularly in the 'shoulder' season (we went in mid-May).

One of many plates of grilled octopus consumed on this trip, and the best. The rest of my diet was mussels in white wine, freshly caught fish of the day, and endless rounds of wine.

I'd buy this car -- if the driver was included -- in a heartbeat.

Caught on camera: a seemingly harmless jump onto sand that left Alex with a broken foot which would require a cast for 8 weeks.
