torino, italy - on foot in the capital of sports cars and chocolate

One Friday back in October, Alessandro drove us down to Torino, Italy for a long weekend. As we drove through the city centre late Friday night, I watched a handsome man in suit just out of work buying milk from a grocery store while carrying a baby in one arm and smoking a cigarette, families dining al fresco and laughing loudly, and a few nonnas walking arm in arm, grinning. A man parked literally in the middle of a road at rush hour was leaning against the car passionately kissing his girlfriend. A cop car cut us off to make an illegal turn.

Good to be back in the best country in the world.

I begged Alex not to cut his hair or shave before this trip so he could sport my favorite look: Italian savage.

This was a mall a few steps from our flat. If I could use a word to describe Torino, it would be 'decadent' -- the food, the architecture, the way people dress. This is the third richest city in Italy and you're aware of it everywhere you look.

Torino is just over the border from both Switzerland and France, and its markets are packed on the weekends with Frenchies buying hundreds of kilograms of cheese.

ROSSO PICCANTE - VIA BERNARDINO GALLIARI 24/B

We had dinner here our first night in town; they carved out a table for us snuggled up against the wine, as there was a humongous party that took up the entire tiny restaurant going on in the front -- and all the requisite constant Italian cheering, laughing, toasting, lovely insulting, and chaos. It was a fantastic experience.

This place is actually run by folks from Apulia, the region Alex is from, and they serve all the good Southern Italian specialties. Above is our "small appetizer for two," the star of which was that beautiful burrata.

Of course, we still had room for entrees and dessert. Never say no to pistachio ice cream.

Did some shopping, too, naturally. (For wine. Always for wine.)

The view from our room onto a sleepy, slow Saturday morning in Torino.

You'd get out of bed for a view like that, too!

Old books, old painting, soft lamp, beautiful views, comfy bed, yellow stucco walls: perfetto.

Dancing like an absolute idiot in the middle of the square. Precious moments.

Tons more photos to share from Torino (went a bit snap happy).... coming very soon.
