cascades du hérisson, jura, france - how about a late summer dip in a french waterfall?

Took a road trip into France on a chilly, rainy late summer day to hike waterfalls and take a dip.

Les cascades du Hérisson are a string of impressive waterfalls connected by hiking trails in a natural park, in the Jura region of France.

This is the gorgeous and gargantuan sight that greets you, walking into the park.

To get an idea of the size, in the photo below, you can just make out me (in my bright blue hat) standing next to it.

As with literally every single other time I'm put in charge of navigating, I took us on the wrong route, promised Alex it "would be fine," and ended up on an unnecessary 1.5 hour hike-detour.

I mean, hey, it's not so bad being lost, when lost looks like this.

The woods are my happy place and I was sort of in my element, blissed out, hopping around like a mountain goat and having a blast, completely oblivious to the fact that Alex was cold and tired and not having such a wonderful time. (Sorry, Alex! I am a horrible girlfriend.)

In the end, despite my best intentions, we found our destination -- the perfect spot for a picnic and a dip.

Alex: "You're not really going swimming, are you?"
Me:

The only other person psychotic enough to swim on this rainy 10'C afternoon was a loony naked Frenchman, as seen below (I call this photo "Two Asses").

So worth it. One of the coolest experiences of my life.

Alex stayed dry and was understandably & rightfully miffed at me for taking him into the freezing cold rain to hike waterfalls when he could be at home eating snacks and watching football.

I think I captured his spirits pretty well here:

Real talk: I went swimming because I had to pee. It was so fucking cold that when Alex asked me if I peed I was like, "Honestly? I'm not even sure."

I had to go back in. (We had a three hour car ride ahead of us.)

Alex's biggest/only smile during this day came when we were leaving to make it home in time to watch football:

I owe Alex about a million bucks for being so wonderful and patient and for enduring my ridiculous antics while I was having the best day ever. These photos are a good reminder that I'm a very lucky girl. A million thanks to Alex for not complaining once and for not breaking up with me.
