villefranche-sur-mer, france - portside rosé & a skipped beach

because we'd landed at 7am the previous day and because i'd insisted that we walk aimless around town for the next 21 hours, we'd felt confident that we'd covered a lot of ground in nice and were ready to see something new on day two of our long weekend in the côte d'azur.

villefranche-sur-mer is tiny and quiet and empty, boasts a gorgeous beach and a bustling port lined with restaurants. when we arrived it was close to siesta and also about 100 degree celsius, so the entirety of the population was clustered on the golden sand beach under colorful umbrellas.

after i turned what should have been a 25 minute walk to the central station into a looping 2 hour slog and nearly caused alex to explode in disbelief at my nonexistent navigation , we were on a quick train to the next town over on the french riviera: villefrance-sur-mer.

twenty minutes later, we were in a paradise of cloudless blue skies, sparkling azure water and beaming marigold buildings.

alex sporting perhaps the first non-alcoholic souvenir we've ever bought in a city: handmade navy blue espadrilles bought back in vieux nice.

we found the port, basked in the cool breeze blowing through the streets, and set about examining the menus of the restaurants lining the port.

we snagged a table at a resto close to the end of the line, settled back into our seats, and ordered a bottle of chilled rosé.

i will say this: the rosé was great, the service was great, the food was absolute shite. what do you expect from a resto that has both BBQ ribs and "burger Mexicain" on its menu? we had it coming.

it didn't matter in the least; this meal was still was pure bliss. pure, sweaty, tipsy bliss.

bellies somewhat satiated, we set off to finish exploring. it was siesta (the french version, anyway -- sieste? must be that.) so we had the city to ourselves.

alex was making faces at me and yawning obviously as if he'd rather be taking a sieste himself than following me as i dragged him around and exclaimed how much i loved every tiny thing.

we stupidly hadn't brought our swimming gear, so we reluctantly skipped the pristine beach and caught the next train back to nice. lessons for next time: always take your trunks. you just never know when you'll want a plunge on a scorching hot day when you're half full of rosé in the south of france.
