todi, umbria, italy - hunting for fiats and a wedding venue

our home base for our weekend roadtrip south through italy was todi, in umbria, just south of tuscany and maybe an hour and a half or so from rome. we were officially wedding venue scouting up in the rolling hills, but took a day break to explore the old town of todi.

this is the main square and it changed massively from minute to minute. i think 45 seconds after this picture was taken, a huge semi truck came through and unloaded food. twenty minutes later there was a massive rally in the square. a few hours later it was packed with tables and chairs and kids fresh out of school eating gelato.

in an episode that perfectly sums us up as individuals, alex touching this car handle caused the car alarm to sound, and he walked away coolly and casually while i bounced up and down with wide eyes next to him screaming that we needed to RUN because THEY WILL DEPORT ME.

churches galore and they were all brilliantly beautiful inside. so much so that alex discussed having a catholic ceremony in a church, which i told him was impossible since he was not catholic, and he responded darkly that "anyone can be bought." kid watches so much HBO.

me: "i want this one."
alex: "we will buy you a new one, that won't fall apart as soon as you sit in it."
me: "NO. i want THIS ONE."
alex, sorry. everyone else, be grateful you are not engaged to be with me for the rest of your life.

naturally, the todi installment of "alex admiring fine food and wine through shop windows." as you can see he was already toting a three-pack of fine wine. typical.

me: "i want that one."
alex: sighs. "whatever, babe."
he's learning.

after the city, it was back to the outskirts of town. we've officially selected a venue here, paperwork signed and deposit made -- so now we really have to get married, alexander. here's a little preview of next june.

driving up the little dirt road to the venue.

we were desperate to swim here, but it was just very slightly that much too chilly. it's illuminated and lit at night, and i pledged that one night after too much wine at dinner i would go skinny dipping, but it never happened, because instead i went to bed, because i am a 98 year old.

i insisted on being in this picture "for scale reference."

our set up for breakfast, prepared fresh from scratch every morning. yogurt from scratch, pastries and bread from scratch, meats and cheese and fruit all local and organic and fresh. best breakfast of all time. we gorged.

the locals.

see you guys there next june!
