amsterdam, the netherlands - february 13-15

Last year I met Alex in Barcelona for Valentine's Day weekend. I flew out of JFK the day after a nor'easter, when Brooklyn was blanketed in 8 inches of snow; when I arrived, I was sweating profusely in a light sweater and eating outdoors in short sleeves, desperate for a cold beer. We spent the weekend hanging out on the beach, eating tapas with cold beer, and not wearing winter coats or shoveling any snow, at all.

This year, we decided to go the opposite route and embrace winter by going to a notoriously cold place during the coldest month of the year. To celebrate tru luv! As it turned out, Europe was swept with a "heat wave" and we were greeted with bright blue skies, and temperatures in the high 50s and 50s, the perfect weather for aimless wandering up and down canals and wafel-hunting.

Amsterdam architecture

On our list: the Van Gogh Museum (open til 10pm on Friday nights, when there are many fewer heads to peer over and tourists to jostle), Bloemenmarkt (the floating flower market), grabbing a beer in the city's oldest brewery -- an ancient windmill (alas, we never got around to it!), and, most of all, as much aimless wandering up and down the canals and tiny streets as possible, checking out the houseboats and eating wafels to the point of puking.

Amsterdam surprised me -- I loved it much, much more than I expected to. With a forkful of waffel and a stomach sloshing with Prosecco, I kept asking myself, "Best city ever?" Not quite -- Lisbon's not likely to be dislodged -- but I never expected anywhere to come so close!

Four AM wake-up call: totally worth it. 55 minute flight, 17 minute cab ride, and GO.

D'VIJFF VLIEGHEN - Spuistraat 294-302

We went to this restaurant on recommendation from a friend. The recommendation was "do not skip the liquors at the end." You can see the theme of this trip.

We did not skip the liquors at the end. "Heavenly bliss" for her and something Limoncello-y for the Italian, natch.

Good morning, Amsterdam!

We stayed in an AirBNB in the 'working class' neighborhood of Jordaan. The Jordaan has a reputation of being quiet, less crowded, and gorgeous. It was an easy sell. No regrets. Our apartment had a very gorgeous balcony, which we loved, and traditional Dutch stairs, which we... had complicated feelings about? A love/hate thing?

We took very much advantage of our balcony, which seemed perpetually drenched in warm sunlight.

It had a not awful view.

Amsterdam stairs
Traditional dutch stairs leading 90 degrees straight up to our apartment.

I am a total, typical, obnoxious snob after all those years in NYC. "I've lived in a fifth-floor walk-up. And a fourth-floor walk-up. SO, this is totally not a big deal for ME." *smug smile that makes people want to punch you in face*

 BAR MOUSTACHE - Utrechtsestraat 141

We went here for brunch. At one point, the electricity was out, the computer was down, and a baby was crying next to us, but regardless, we have nothing but amazing/delicious/happy memories of this place and would've gone back for every meal.

STACH has a bunch of locations around Amsterdam, and we walked out of here with a little bag of stroopwafels -- the most incredible, delicious, perfect food in the world.

Piping hot wafel with hot chocolate sauce. We split this, because clearly, we are concerned with calories and rarely over-indulge when on vacation.

In my Valentine's Day finest. I am that annoying person that wears pink/red all week around Valentine's and exclusively red and green on Christmas, etc.

Wilde Zwijnen Amsterdam
WILDE ZWIJNEN - Javaplein 23

We went here for Valentine's Day dinner. Not to overstate, but this was the best meal either of us had ever or ever will have. If you're going to Amsterdam, go to this restaurant. Make a reservation and read the New York Times blurb so you'll be equally convinced to order the chef's surprise menu. We got the 3-course and after one bite, were kicking each other for not getting the 4-course.

Cute touch: they write your names on the wood table with chalk. They thought Alex's name was "Aux" (pronounced 'O') so that is what they called him all night, which brought much joy and laughter to my heart.

At some point I said to Alex, "We had an extremely low selfie count today. Only three." And he looked at me like he wanted to retract his marriage offer.

There are a ton of houseboats docked all over Amsterdam's canals, and they were truly beautiful. There is even one that is exclusively home to stray cats. Really! I read it in a BOOK (that means it is true; not like reading stuff on the Internet). It had a picture of a cat sitting at a table eating from a bowl of cat food.

There were Air BNBs where you could rent a houseboat to live in for the weekend, but Alex pointed out that I get violently seasick just by looking at water and he did not want to clean up vomit all weekend. Touche. He did, however, let me stand on a boat. If marriage is all about compromise, we got this. Marriage is gonna be so easy!

We went to Pata Negra, a widely-beloved Spanish tapas joint, on our last night in Amsterdam. All of the reviews said "it doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't be deceived!" But Alex and I agreed that it was obviously the best and most beautiful building ever. #soulmates

We saw this sign on our way home from dinner on our last night in Amsterdam, and thought, "Are we looking for something? Is something missing?" And we realized yes, something was. (But it wasn't beer. It never is for me. Beer is never my answer.)

STROOPWAFEL MCFLURRY FROM MCDONALDS. As I look at this picture I can hear Barry White's "My First, My Last, My Everything". Soooo goood. I defend this as a "cultural activity" because... nevermind, not finishing that sentence.
