lisbon, portugal - may 28-31, 2014

when we went to barcelona in february for valentine's day, i proclaimed it the most beautiful city i'd ever seen and decided it took the trophy for my favorite city in the world. alex kept insisting that i'd love lisbon even more. when my flight from barcelona to nyc pulled into jfk, i powered on my phone and had an email from alexander: he'd booked us two flights to lisbon in may. boyfriend of the year.

we were able to stay at a friend's apartment in the city center, and rented a car for easy access to the most beautiful beaches. we spent our few days here eating a lot of pulpo (octopus) and pasteis de nata (egg tarts), laying out in the sun on the most beautiful (and empty) beaches i've ever seen, drinking on terraces with ridiculous views, and holding hands across restaurant tables, madly in love. ahhhh. the life.

a beautiful morning in lisbon! the air was fresh, the sky was bright, and we were so excited and in love! and then, we saw our rental car.

a ticket, a parking claw, AND caution tape. lisbon don't do slaps on the wrist. lisbon goes hard.

alex: "don't worry babe, i got this. step aside."

one morning we woke up super early to see the palace at sintra, a beautiful yellow castle that sits atop a tall mountain with a breathtaking view of lisbon. unfortunately, the temperature had taken a huge nose dive, and i was not only hungry and grumpy but COLD. and when i am cold, i am a MONSTER. we wandered around this beautiful yellow castle with an absolutely incredible view in the freezing cold and heavy winds, as i was massively underdressed, sulking, and miserable. sorry, alex.

not a bad view.

so windy. so cold. alex captured it perfectly.
of course, the SECOND we got in the car to leave, the temperature increased by literally 30 degrees, all the clouds disappeared, and the sun shone brightly in a beautiful blue sky.

thankfully, our destination was the beach at cascais. we floated along the long boardwalk in the sun. this was one of the most striking places i've ever been.

i love my face here. "alex, you're ruining the picture. this is SERIOUS. stop fucking around."

we took a long drive through the countryside to some hidden beaches, on a small and ridiculously windy road that we ended up on many times on this trip, and which i hence named "awesome road."

surf beach portugal
at a surf beach near sundown. it was a little too windy and chilly for swimming, so we had a drink at the bar instead.

grilled octopus lisbon portugal
grilled octopus again for dinner, naturally. this whole meal cost us like $4. best country ever.
the next day was easily 1,000 degrees farenheit. beach day. we drove to adraga beach.

yawny at the beach.

and then drove into town for ice-cream. alex picked the spot (his family is in the food business so he has "standards" = total snob, unlike me. i am basically a goat. give me anything. i will eat it and like it.)

we drove to a beach which is only accessed by driving down a terrifyingly technical, rocky, tiny, jeep-only road, followed by a harrowing descent down an overgrown footpath on the side of a mountain.

we made it down the road, but, since we were both wearing sandals, opted out of the harrowing descent down an overgrown footpath on the side of a mountain.

we were happy enough with the view from the top.

alex led me into a secret old moorish palace to admire the incredible colored tiles. we paid them due respect, with ugly-face selfies.
